well, we didn’t get killed…

… as far as we know…
The particle collider started up under geneva, and the universe wasn’t destroyed, or if it was, it was replaced with an identical one or some other analytic philosophy nonsense that makes the destruction of the universe an extremely subtle affair. Of course, no collisions have taken place yet, so I don’t know that it really counts. I mean, it’s a “particle collider” but this first test was just sending particles in a circle.

I think part of the problem is that scientists aren’t very good at explaining to non-scientists what they are doing. Listening to Brian Green try to say what is happening on the Brian Lehrer show, he keeps just saying stuff like “it’s possible the moon is made of green cheese!” – instead of being able to really explain exactly why it’s unlikely the collision would have universe-changing results. Well, the first proper tests will be within the next few weeks, so enjoy it while it lasts, and see you on the flip side.

Or more likely, we can have a somewhat cliche argument someday over whether it is worth spending this kind of money on what results in fairly esoteric research instead of saving children in africa or whatever…
