651 votes…

I don’t know how I missed this back during the RNC, but it really is mind blowing:

The biggest whopper of the night may have come from former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who charged that Palin “got more votes running for mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, than Joe Biden got running for president of the United States.” It may sound like a great line, but it’s not true – not even close. Palin garnered 651 votes in 1996 and 909 votes in 1999 in her two races for mayor of Wasilla, according to the city. Biden, despite withdrawing from the race after the Iowa caucus, got 79,754 votes in the Democratic primaries.

Yes, she won WITH 651 votes, not BY 651 votes. Her nearest opponent, John Stein, received 440; Cliff Silvers got 36 and there were 2 write-ins. (all info available here). So this really could’ve been smaller than a high school election… Wasilla’s population might be a whopping 6300 but its voting population is about 1100.

In contrast, 45,486 people voted for Obama to be the state senator in the 1998 race, according to this site. So that’s about 50 times as many people…

Not that it matters to people who will vote for her now. I just found it amusing.
